The 30th General Conference of The WFB, the 21st General Conference of the WFBY, and the 12th Council Meeting of the WBU

It has been almost 4 years since our last assembly at the 29th General Conference in Japan B.E. 2561 (2018) due to the effects of a pandemic around the world that require social distancing for preventing the contagion of the pandemic.  The 30th WFB General Conference was held concurrently with the 21st WFBY General Conference, and the 12th Council Meeting of the WBU from 18-21 October B.E. 2565 (2022) in the City of Bangkok and Nakhon Pathom Province, Thailand.  The 98th Executive Council Meeting of The WFB was held at the Headquarters of The WFB in Bangkok which H.E. Phan Wannamethee, President of The WFB, had expressed his declination of nominating him for another term of presidency on account of it being his full relaxing time.

At the Conference, there was election of the Office Bearers, i.e. the President, Vice-Presidents, and Standing Committees of The WFB.  H.E. Phallop Thaiarry, who was Vice-President and Secretary-General, was elected as the newly President by unanimous acclamation, including 17 Vice-Presidents, and 11 Chairpersons of Standing Committees.  In this regard, President of The WFB, had introduced Mr. Montian Thananart (President of Young Buddhist Association of Thailand under the Royal Patronage) as Secretary-General, and Mr. Kongkar Tipkeeree as Treasurer of The WFB.

The theme of this conference is “Buddhism in the Time of Crisis”, which was timely addressed due to the pandemic situation and international conflict that keeps affecting countries around the world.  This year there were 370 on-site and 300 via webinar participants.  The total of 670 clergy and laity from 20 countries attended the conference and meeting.  At the same time the WFBY also celebrated its 50th of WFBY Anniversary of establishment.
