UNESCO Inscribes Zojoji Temple's Tripitaka on Memory of the World Register

On 15th April B.E. 2568 (2025), UNESCO has officially inscribed the three versions of the Buddhist Tripitaka preserved at Zojoji Temple in Tokyo, Japan, onto the Memory of the World International Register. This marks a major recognition of Buddhist cultural heritage and a significant contribution to humanity’s shared documentary legacy.
The Tripitaka - comprising Southern Song Sixi Canon, Yuan Dynasty Puning Canon, and Goryeo Dynasty Canon – is now acknowledge as a global intellectual treasure, showcasing ancient printing, textual scholarship, and papermaking traditions.
The World Fellowship of Buddhists (The WFB) congratulates the Japan Buddhist Federation (JBF) on historic achievement. The successful inscription resulted by a collaborative effort led by The WFB President Mr. Phallop Thaiarry, Mr. Jun-An Bill Chen , WFB Deputy Secretary-General and the Executive of The WFB Office at UNESCO, Rev. Masamichi Kobayashi, Rev. Yoshiharu Tomatsu, Rev. Ikuko Hibino, Rev. Ryosho Shoji, the Japan Buddhist Federation (JBF), Zojoji Temple, and Jodo Shu Denomination.
Now digitized and global accessible, the Tripitaka offers high-resolution images and English translations for researchers, students, and the public worldwide. This effort exemplifies the Memory of the World’s mission: to preserve, access, and raise awareness of documentary heritage.
From 15th – 17th September B.E. 2568 (2025), a JBF delegation comprised of Rev. Masamichi Kobayashi (Vice-President of The WFB), Rev. Ikuko Hibino (Advisor to The WFB), and Rev. Ryosho Shoji (Deputy Secretary-General of The WFB) paid the courtesy visit to executives of UNESCO Headquarters, and executives of The WFB Office at UNESCO.
They met with H.E. Ambassador Simon-Mirela Miculescu, President of the 42nd General Conference of UNESCO, expressing gratitude for her support in the successful inscription of the sacred Buddhist canons preserved at Zojoji Temple in Japan. They reaffirmed their commitment to spiritual leadership in safeguarding and promoting peace and harmony.
Moreover, the delegations discussed with Mr. Jun-An Bill Chen, WFB Deputy Secretary-General and the Executive of The WFB Office at UNESCO, outlined next year’s activities of The WFB
