The WFB has reestablished its relationship with the Sangha of Laos after 48-year disconnection.

Most Ven. Somdet Phra Mahathirachan, a member of Thai Supreme Sangha Council, the Abbot of Wat Phrachetuphol Vimolmangklaram, and the Supreme Advisor of The WFB, led a delegation to Vientiane City, Lao People’s Democratic Republic on 5 Oct. B.E. 2566 (2023).  The delegation included Mr. Phallop Thaiarry (President), Mr. Montian Thananart (Secretary-General), Mr. Samarn Sudto (Advisor), and Mr. Kittitat Thaiarry (Director of the Office of WBU), along with Thai monks.  The honorary title from The WFB “Sangha Patron” was bestowed upon His Holiness Phra Ajan Yai Phramaha Bounma Simmaphom, the Supreme Patriarch and President of the Central Buddhist Fellowship Organization of the Lao PDR (CBFO), and worked towards restoring the relationship between The WFB and the Sangha of Laos, which had endured for nearly five decades due to changing of circumstances in Laos.

On this significant occasion, The WFB also provided financial assistance of five hundred thousand Baht through CBFO for developing and propagation of Buddhism.

The visit was warmly received by the Lao Sangha and the Buddhist community at the Dharma Sabha Conference Hall, Phrathat Luang Temple in Vientiane.  The ceremony was attended by esteemed monks from CBFO and distinguished figures from the government sector, including Mr. Boonthawi Phornthasin, Deputy Director General of the Department of Religious Affairs at the National Development of Lao PDR.

Mr. Phallop Thaiarry, President of the WFB, acknowledge the vital role played by the Lao Sangha, emphasizing its profound influence on the lives of the people.  He expressed The WFB’s high regard for the Lao Sangha’s dedication to instilling the sublime teachings of the Lord Buddha in the hearts of the Laotian people.

The honorary title of Sangha Patron conferred upon Most Ven. Phra Ajan Yai Bounma by  The WFB was met with heartfelt appreciation.  It stands as a prestigious accolade for CBFO in Lao PDR.  Most Ven. Phra Ajan Yai Bounma further affirmed the enduring bond between the Sanghas of Laos and Thailand, as well as the mutual support shared among the Buddhist communities of both nations.

Mr. Boonthawi Pornthasin, Deputy Director General of the Department for the Central of National Development, responsible for religious affairs, commended The WFB and its global membership.  He believed that bestowing this honor upon the leader of the Laos Sangha would undoubtedly fortify Buddhism in Laos.  He expressed confidence of both countries would continue to work together to strengthen Buddhism, transcending denominational boundaries and ensuring its propagation for generations to come.
