Buddhism in the Time of Crisis

The WFB Headquarters hosted the 30th General Conference concurrently with the 21st General Conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhist Youth (WFBY), and the 12th Council Meeting of the World Buddhist University (WBU).  It is a great honor to The WFB family in which His Holiness Somdet Phra Ariyavongsagatanana (Amborn Ambaro) graciously presided over the Opening Ceremony and kindly delivered the speech of good deeds.  On the first day, the 98th Executive Council Meeting was held in Bangkok at the Headquarters of The WFB.  Meanwhile, the two business days were held at Mahamakut Buddhist University in Nakhon Pathom Province.  It was almost four years that social distancing was requested for preventing contagion of COVID-19.  This time there were 670 participants (300 on-site and 370 via webinar) attending the Conference.  The WFBY also celebrated their 50th Anniversary of their establishment.  Moreover, the MOU between Lumbini Development Trust and the WBU was signed.   


“Buddhism in the Time of Crisis” was the theme of the Conference and the keynote speaker was Ven. Phra Panyawachiramoree, who was a well-known monk on how to survive from the crisis by applying Buddhist teaching in solving problems and crisis.  The world was in crisis affected by pandemic and Thailand was aggravated by inundate flood.  Venerable established Wat Pah Srisaengtham School as the case study of sustainable in action and received many awards from local and international organizations.  His notion was providing education combined with virtue and teaching of the Buddha.  Students were taught on how to handle the situation when the crisis comes.  All problems and crisis could be solved if you have enough education and way of thinking.  Students of the school produce solar cell panel to economize energy.  The school is the agronomy studying field of energy saving research, sharing solar energy among buildings and growing agricultural product on the roof top of the buildings that were sold for earning income.  This is a BCG (Bio-Circular-Green) model that is national project for helping people and developing the country.  The school was built and organized based on the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy initiated by King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX).  This philosophy was extended to sustainable agronomy by the present King, H.M. King Maha Vijiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua (King Rama X) and is now mobilizing all over the country.  


H.E. Phan Wannamethee, had declined another term of nomination for president.  At this conference, Mr. Phallop Thaiarry, was elected unanimously as the 6th President of The WFB along with the new Office Bearers (Vice-Presidents, Executive Council Members, and Chairperson of Standing Committees).  In addition, there was a resolution for designation of two additional Vice-Presidents other than eighteen in number defined by Constitution of The WFB, namely Ven. Wu Shin as Vice-President @ UNESCO, and Rev. Young In-sa as Vice-President @UN.
