On 1 January B.E. 2567 (2024) a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, followed by thousands of aftershocks.  The main shock led to the disruption of electricity and water supplies.  The earthquake triggered fires in some cities, resulting in the estimated destruction of hundreds of houses.  Additionally, over 8,000 houses were either collapsed/damaged, and there were 227 reported deaths in Ishikawa prefecture.  At least 997 people sustained injuries, and thousands had to evacuated.  The quake also caused significant disruptions to transport and communication services.
H.E. Mr. Phan Wannamethee, Honorary President of The WFB, expresses deep concern for the people of Japan.  He urges Mr. Phallop Thaiarry, President of The WFB, to expedite humanitarian assistance to alleviate the situation. 
Initially, The WFB Headquarters intended to send necessities items to Japan.  However, Rev. Masamichi Shodo Kobayashi, Vice-President of The WFB in Japan, and Rev. Yoshiharu Tomatsu, EXCO Member of The WFB, advised against physically going to the affected area.  Meanwhile, the Japan Buddhist Federation (JBF), the sole regional centre of The WFB in Japan, also indicated the difficulty of such efforts.  As a result, the decision was made to provide financial assistance through JBF to facilitate humanitarian assistance in the affected area.
